The big question popped up in front of her:
“Who is God?” She knew the many gods that she worshiped at home. Her family
followed all the rituals pertaining to idol worship. She participated in them
all. But there was a vacuum in Deepti Bhatnagar’s heart. There was a void that
nothing was able to fill. Hailing from a Hindu Kayasth Bhatnagar family in
India, sticking to religious rites and vows was important. Deepti studied in a
convent school and had many Christians as friends. That, however, had no
bearing on her thinking or religious practices. “All I thought was that Jesus
was a foreign God,” she told CBN in an interview. However, what made her start
to rethink was when she saw her fellow engineering student Vikas Massey. Unlike
others, Vikas was well-behaved, well-mannered and conducted himself well. “He
had a very positive attitude,” she recalled. “I wondered how one could be like
him and slowly started to understand him,” she said. Vikas told her what made
him be what he was. It was the Bible. And it was the Bible that changed
Deepti’s life as she read about Jesus. Vikas had told her what Jesus had done
for mankind. God himself took the form of man, died on the cross for everyone’s
sins, rose again and ascended into heaven. This is what the Bible said. Deepti
read the Bible passages carefully. She was drawn to the Lord. Vikas gently
asked if Jesus said if one should worship idols and rely on works to enter
heaven. “That was a question that made me think again and again. I read the
Bible and decided that I would accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and savior. It
was not an emotional decision. I took the decision after understanding the
scripture,” Deepti said. That was in October 2002. But there was opposition at
home. They did not like Deepti believing in Jesus. Deepti only stood strong in
the Lord. And now even her family and some other family members accepted the
Lord as their savior. Deepti and Vikas got married in 2006 and are blessed with
two children. Through the Family Life Ministries, Jaipur, India, they go around
India and different countries preaching about Jesus. Acharya Vikas Massey who
is well-versed in the Hindu scriptures brings out the truth about Jesus from
the vedic literature.
