Today’s meditation is taken from Matthew 5:3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
We will continue to look at the Sermon on the Mount, probably one of the most famous and important verses in the Bible, these will give the standards of the Christian life.
What is it means “POOR IN SPIRIT"?
It simply means being poor in spirit for what we have not from outside but inside, in today’s world being "poor in spirit" is equated with being depressed, weak, timid, and passive and Blessed are the rich, the famous, the powerful, the movers and shakers, the important, the aggressive, the self-reliant, the self-confident, the glamorous”, but Jesus said “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”. "Poor in spirit" does not refer to financial poverty, lack of courage, false humility which is designed to gain the sympathy of others. It actually means "poor in spirit" is to humbly bow our hearts to God, acknowledging our total spiritual poverty before Him and our utter dependence upon Him. And it says "I am nothing; I have nothing; I can do nothing; I stand in need of all things."
How Can We Develop POOR IN SPIRIT"?
It’s important to develop the poorness of spirit, we cannot produce this nature by our own but it’s the work of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of the true believers, by nature we are self righteous and filled with pride. It takes a miracle of the grace of God to bring us to "poor in spirit." The key to becoming more Christ like in this area of our life is to spend much time in the Word of God, reading and learning about the life of Christ. Starting from Abraham to Apostle Paul, all were naturally aggressive, self-assertive, and self-oriented but the power and Grace of God made them “Poor in Spirit”. We have to imitate and follow what Jesus taught us.
Who will Secure Place Kingdom of Heaven?
In order to enter the kingdom of heaven a person must first go down and have poor in spirit. We all need to be humble and especially, humble before the Lord. All the people on the earth struggling to get secure place here, may be in college, job, business , society etc., but they all forgot the fact that those are temporary. We need to develop poorness in spirit nature to get the real blessing from God.
